HyFlex Faculty Training and Readiness

HyFlex courses allow students to participate in person, online synchronously, or online asynchronously while working toward the same learning outcomes. Teaching in this format requires intentional course design, proficiency with HyFlex classroom technology, and the ability to support an equitable learning experience across all participation modes.

Because HyFlex includes an in-person classroom experience, faculty interested in teaching in this modality must be comfortable teaching face-to-face and simultaneously supporting students participating online.

The Division of Digital Learning provides the required training, consultation, course-design guidance, and quality assurance certification for faculty preparing to teach HyFlex courses.

2026 HyFlex Institute

The 2026 HyFlex Institute is being offered for faculty who:

• Are currently teaching a HyFlex course during Fall 2026; or
• Are scheduled to teach a HyFlex course during Spring 2027.

The institute will help currently assigned faculty develop the skills and resources needed to teach effectively in the HyFlex modality. Training will address:

• HyFlex instructional principles and expectations
• Strategies for engaging in-person and online students
• Course design across participation types
• Blackboard course preparation
• HyFlex classroom technology
• Student communication and participation expectations
• Accessibility and equitable access
• Faculty, course, room, and schedule readiness

Face-to-Face Session Details:

• Date: Friday, December 4, 2026
• Time: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
• Note: Registration will open on October 5th 2026

The HyFlex Readiness Process

Beginning with the Summer 2027 training cycle, ACC will use a coordinated process to prepare faculty and courses for HyFlex delivery.

The process includes:

• Reviewing faculty interest and prior HyFlex offerings
• Identifying courses that may be well suited for HyFlex delivery
• Confirming academic department support
• Coordinating the section and an appropriate HyFlex classroom
• Completing required faculty training and course preparation
• Verifying faculty, course, room, and schedule readiness
• Monitoring course outcomes to inform future HyFlex planning

A HyFlex course is considered ready to launch when all four areas have been verified:

• Faculty Ready: The instructor has completed the required consultation, training, and preparation.
• Course Ready: The course supports students across all required participation modes and has successfully met quality assurance standards.
• Room Ready: The assigned classroom has the necessary HyFlex technology.
• Schedule Ready: The course and room are accurately scheduled and communicated to students.

Interested in Teaching HyFlex in the Future?

Faculty who would like to be considered for future HyFlex teaching opportunities must complete the HyFlex Faculty Interest Form first. After the form is submitted, the Division of Digital Learning will contact the faculty member to schedule a required consultation.

During the consultation, Digital Learning and the faculty member will:

• Review the HyFlex instructional model and faculty expectations
• Discuss the faculty member’s experience and comfort with face-to-face teaching
• Consider whether the proposed course is a suitable fit for HyFlex delivery
• Review the requirements for teaching students across all participation modes
• Identify required training, course-design, and technology preparation
• Discuss department support, scheduling feasibility, and next steps

Completing the interest form or consultation does not guarantee a HyFlex course assignment. Teaching assignments must also be supported by the faculty member’s academic department and coordinated through the college’s scheduling process.

Requirements for Teaching HyFlex

Before teaching in the HyFlex modality, faculty must:

1. Complete the HyFlex Faculty Interest Form.
2. Participate in a required consultation with the Division of Digital Learning.
3. Be comfortable teaching in a face-to-face classroom environment.
4. Receive support from their academic department for the proposed HyFlex course.
5. Complete the required HyFlex training and course-design preparation.
6. Demonstrate readiness to use the assigned HyFlex classroom technology.
7. Complete the applicable faculty, course, room, and schedule readiness requirements.
